If the encoder doesn't provide the inverted signals, the controller may not count if the signals are not connected to the correct input.
It exist different encoder outputs, and according to the encoder specifications, the single signals have to be connected to the positive or inverted input. Please refer to the I/O list where this issue is described. (extract below) This is the same for the index signals.
